To coincide with the most romantic day of the year, 14 February, the disability charity Scope has launched a new campaign called Kiss Awkward Goodbye. Do you struggle to know what is the right and wrong thing to say to a Deaf person? Well, since then I have spoken to some of my Deaf friends and have found more things to add to that list. This time though, I wanted to add a positive element to it. People just don’t know what the right thing to do is. If you really want to comment on their speech, say it a different way.

The offensive part is “for a Deaf person. Again, if you want to comment on their speech you could say, “you speak really well. Any level of speech is hard hard work. Tons of hours and lessons. Relationships are all about communication. So, what happens when you and your date communicate differently? Many deaf and hard of hearing individuals depend upon lip reading to communicate. The better the lighting at your destination, the more likely it is that your date will be able to understand what you are saying.

Before you go out, take some steps to make communication as easy as possible. While it may be tempting to ask your date about their hearing loss, this does not make for great date conversation. Deaf and hard of hearing people are no different than hearing people, and their hearing loss is only one part of their story. Get to know them, ask them about their interests and passions. If they bring up their hearing loss, then feel free to naturally transition to that conversation but, otherwise, steer clear.

While sign language may not be universal in the deaf community, it is incredibly common. If you are planning a date with someone who speaks sign language, learning a few key phrases can be a sweet gesture that will improve your communication and make your conversation a bit more natural. I’m female, in my 30s and deaf. Despite an active life, I have been single for years

Late on the night that was technically no longer my birthday, two women were in bed with me. One of them I had recently fallen in love with. To say I was obsessed with her would be putting it lightly. We were bathed in a comforting dark as I snaked my way down her taut torso, stopping briefly to pay heed to the birthmark just below her breast.

So tomorrow I’m going to be getting coffee with this amazing, kind, beautiful woman Very important to do this right at the start with every deaf person you meet.

Being able to hear is a gift, a gift that many of us take for granted every single day of our lives. I started my online dating phase fresh out of a long-distance relationship with someone who was in the military, and had no plans of ever returning home he wanted to stay in Europe. Online dating is weird, entertaining, experimental and mind-blowing all at the same time. Eventually, I met someone online that I ended up dating for a little over two years.

He was funny and a total beef head, from what I saw on his profile at 21 years old, that was attractive. We messaged back and forth for a while and decided to meet up at a Chipotle , but not before I found out that he was deaf. My first thought was something like, there’s no way I can date a deaf dude ; it was just so foreign to me. But knowing my spirit of always looking for something new and willing to learn something new every day, it wasn’t too far-fetched, so I thought.

We hung out a lot. Yes, they are all deaf. I wasn’t just stepping into a new world; I was thrown into the lion’s den. I picked up on some things quickly — thank goodness for the Internet and YouTube videos that helped me really learn how to move my hands, arms, body and face. I learned quickly that there are two forms of ASL: the hearing kind and the deaf kind.

Very intimidating.

What It’s Like Dating Through Deafness: “I’m Forced to Be More Intimate”

A recent thread on Reddit featured a year-old deaf woman who said she really wanted to have sex, but she was scared to. I celebrated with girlfriends. Dating is a weird complex. Guys and girls go about dating in completely different ways. How each party perceives a certain situation feels like ying and yang, black and white, but somehow people make it work. I became more and more aware of the guy-girl contrasting dynamic when I hit 12 or 13 years old, just as we were all hitting puberty. Conveniently enough, this is also the time when I started to notice more stares in my direction when I wore my hair up or when I would ask someone to repeat themselves more than once.

The early teen years are a confusing time for everyone. For me, it was this apparent awareness that I was not like the other boys and girls. Something separated me from everyone else.

Common reactions to hearing loss

Romantic relationships take a lot of work. But what if one person is deaf and their partner is hearing, are deaf-hearing relationships possible and if so, is it worth the effort? I was in a relationship with a hearing guy for 7 years. My next relationship was with a deaf man, and we just understood each other, it was very easy. Curious about how other deaf and hard of hearing people experience deaf-hearing relationships, I took to Facebook and posted the question to my friends.

There is a wide variation in the causes of deafness. Because of this 9 out of 10 deaf children are born to hearing parents and 1 out of 10 children born to deaf parents are also deaf. In older age, mild hearing loss is much more common and, to date, less is known about how genes contribute to this, though there is research in this area. More is known about childhood deafness and about half is thought to have a genetic cause.

Other common causes are premature birth, infections in the mother during pregnancy for example, rubella german measles or cytomegalovirus CMV or infections after birth for example, mumps or meningitis. Of those cases with a genetic cause, one third has a syndromic link where the deafness is found with other signs or health problems. The other two thirds have deafness alone. This is summarised in the diagram below.

A genetic change may have been inherited from further back in the family or may have occurred in that individual for the first time. Many genes are involved in the development and function of the ear and, at the time of writing, 45 recessive, dominant and X-linked genes that cause non-syndromic deafness have been pinpointed and another loci identified positions in the genome, but where the gene itself has not yet been found have been determined.
